Think about the two different demonstrations that took place outside this week.
First, explain what we did in the first ditch. Tell about the landforms you saw being formed. Explain how you knew what you were seeing. (example: A valley was formed because a low place between the two mountains was formed.)
Next, the second paragraph will tell about what we did in the ditch at the top of the hill and what you learned.
You will be graded on whether you used all of the vocabulary words correctly and if you followed the directions to form two paragraphs with topic sentences and concluding sentences and had all required information.
Use the following vocabulary in 2 well written paragraphs. Be sure to include an explanation of how you know each of the things you learned. You may type it here or write on a separate sheet of notebook paper. You will have 2 days to work on it before turning it in. erosion sediment meander canyon delta river basin deposition slope dam lake
During our dirt day we learned about erosion. Erosion is the wearing away of the the earth's surface by wind or water. After the first ditch, Mrs. Greenslade made a hill out of dirt. She sprayed water on the hill. Some of the water got stuck above the hill and formed a basin. A basin is a low bowl shaped area that collects water and will not let it escape. She sprayed more water on the hill, and the water pressure caused the dirt to erode and form a canyon. A canyon is a deep valley caused by water eroding the dirt. The water eroded the canyon away and picked up sediment. Sediment is fine particals of the earth. After the canyon was formed, some of the deposition sunk to the bottom of the ditch and the water meandered around the loose deposits. Deposition is the eroded material that settled out of the water, and meander means slow turns in a river. A river is a large stream that empties into a larger body of water like a lake. A lake is a large body of water surrounded by land. The water and sediment gathered at the end of the ditch to form a delta. A delta is shaped deposits where the river meets larger water such as a lake. On top of the hill, we made a dam out of sticks, rocks, and moss. We wanted to see if the dam would hold back the water. Mrs. Greenslade sprayed water on the top of the hill made out of dirt. It mostly broke through the dam because of the speed of the water and the slope of the ditch. A slope is like an incline. I learned that the steeper the slope the faster the water flows. Dirt day was awesome, and we learned a lot!
